Wigan GP Dr Andrew Ollerton retires. It is with mixed emotions but warm wishes we want to announce that Dr Andrew Ollerton has retired as a GP from Hawkley Brook Medical Practice from April this year. Dr Ollerton qualified in 1982 after studying for 6 years at Cambridge and Birmingham Universities. Following this, he went to Kingussie in the Cairngorms, Scotland, where he had his first GP training post. On his return to Wigan, he continued his GP training and once qualified, he started his first GP position at Marus Bridge Health Centre. After 6 years of working as a GP at Marus Bridge Health Centre, Dr Ollerton formed Hawkley Brook Medical Practice on Highfield Grange Avenue, where he has since been a very proud partner. He later moved the practice to Chandler House, Poolstock Lane, in June 2005. Dr Ollerton served as a knowledgeable, caring and trustworthy GP looking after generations of families. He regularly received praise and outstanding feedback from patients and colleagues alike. He was the first to arrive into the practice in the morning and the last person to leave in the evening, dedication in its utpmost form. For more than 20 years, Dr Ollerton worked tirelessly in the evenings and over the bank holidays and weekends to look after the patients of Wigan. Dr Ollerton made time to do additional work in hospital outpatient clinics supporting secondary care while broadening his skills and knowledge. He worked in many different specialities, including Diabetes, Tuberculosis Clinics and Sexual Health Services, to name just a few. Dr Ollerton dedicated many years as a volunteer at the Hospice in Poolstock before moving to Hindley, looking after patients by providing compassionate care. He was also fortunate enough to volunteer his medical services further afield, travelling to Romania, visiting several children’s homes, trips to Lourdes in France providing health care for visiting pilgrims and providing health care to isolated tribes living in communities along the Amazon River in South America. Dr Ollerton has worked as a devoted GP for many years and is a very well-known doctor in the Wigan Borough. He is known for his hard work and passion for providing the highest quality care to his patients. If you ever had the pleasure to work alongside him or be cared for by him, you will know he was one of a kind. He will truly be missed by patients, colleagues, staff and all of those in the Wigan Borough Health Care System.
